In 1983, R. Rox Anderson and John Parrish described selective photothermolysis — the principle beneath essentially every modern laser. Energy destroys a target only when two things are true at once.
Light only heats what its colour couples to — the target's own pigment, its chromophore, and little else. Haemoglobin for vessels, melanin for pigment, water for resurfacing. Miss the chromophore and the energy passes through, harmless and useless.
Every target has a thermal relaxation time that grows with the square of its size. Pulse faster than that and the heat stays trapped in the target. Pulse slower, and it leaks into the tissue around it — and burns what you never meant to touch.

Match both laws and you kill the target and nothing around it. Miss either and you injure the neighbourhood. Everything below is plotted against that law — the lasers that honour it, and the modalities that never could. Clay obeys neither, because it needs to injure nothing at all.

Clay is a stack of microscopic mineral sheets carrying a permanent negative charge and an enormous hidden surface. It lifts oil and debris off the skin by adsorption — no wound, no downtime. And its power has a clock: fresh clay is chemically reduced (grey-green, Fe²⁺). Let air reach it and the iron oxidises to Fe³⁺ — it reddens, and it's spent.
In a controlled trial, a clay mask measurably lowered sebum, improved skin evenness, raised surface hydration and reduced water loss over four weeks — working entirely at the surface. That is the whole mechanism: adsorption, not injury. It lands exactly in the empty corner of the map above.
